Let’s Celebrate!

March 4th marks World Obesity Day, a day of global awareness and action toward tackling the obesity epidemic. This year's theme, Changing the perspective, inspires us to think beyond traditional weight loss methods and embrace a holistic approach.

Remember the story we heard as children of the blind men describing the elephant as a snake (trunk), a wall (sturdy body), a sharp spear (tusk), a tree (leg ), a fan (ears ), or a rope (tail)? Similarly, weight loss is not just about food and exercise but a complex combination of genetics, mental health, medications for chronic diseases, lifestyle, sleep, and environment.

Per World Health Organization (WHO), in 2016, more than 1.9 billion adults over 18 were overweight, of which 650 million were obese. Per the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), 41.9% of Americans had obesity between 2017-2020. Unfortunately, these numbers have worsened in the past several years. Sadly, we are under the impression that we are alone in this struggle. But let's remind each other we are in this together and celebrate every pound we lose.

Often we are frustrated with just 1 pound of weight loss, but every pound lost is a big win. Studies have shown 1 pound of weight loss takes an approximately 4-fold weight load off your knees. So, for example, a weight loss of 10 lbs takes a 40 lbs load exerted on your knees when you walk. Furthermore, reducing 5-10% of body weight can significantly reduce the risk of diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease by lowering various types of cholesterol. In addition, 5-10% body weight loss reduces the risk of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and multiple types of cancers and improves mental health, including depression and anxiety.

Remember, weight loss and maintenance is a marathon, not a sprint. It is a long road with a few mountains to climb, but we can share the road map to continue this journey.

We invite you to join us on this journey to change our perspectives about weight by sharing your success stories and struggles. Together, we can break down misconceptions and celebrate the beauty of individuality.

Get ready to receive our upcoming Weight Loss Tales newsletter, filled with motivation and insights to help you on your journey. Together, we can make a difference.

Keep inspiring, stay inspired.
